The Co-operative, one of Britain’s biggest farmers, will open the gates at six of its farms to the public this Sunday (Sunday 9th June) as part of its sponsorship of Open Farm Sunday

The Co-operative Farms, which is one of the principal sponsors of the scheme, is helping to showcase British farming by welcoming visitors to its farms across the country as part of the national event, organised by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming).

During the day visitors will learn about the farms, and what crops are grown there, as well as hear more about its award-winning outdoor learning experience for primary school pupils, called from “From Farm to Fork”, and also its Habitat Heroes scheme to protect and preserve endangered wildlife.

There will also be a variety of machinery displays and tractor rides, bee-keeping and cookery demonstrations at The Co-operative’s farms which are hosting the events at: Blairgowrie, Perthshire; Coldham, Cambridgeshire; Down Ampney, Gloucestershire; Goole, East Yorkshire; Stoughton, Leicestershire; and Tillington, Herefordshire.

Richard Quinn, Head of The Co-operative Farms, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Open Farm Sunday and give visitors a greater appreciation of the importance of farming, both in supplying food and protecting wildlife within its natural habitat.

“The Co-operative is proud to support British farming. We have a long heritage in agriculture and have been operating our own farms for more than 100 years to provide our customers with high-quality British produce. By supporting Open Farm Sunday, we will be able to reach out to the communities in which we farm and our customers and members, and showcase our role within the local community and the wider farming industry and as a key, quality supplier to The Co-operative’s food stores.”

Open Farm Sunday was launched in 2006 and each year has seen hundreds of farmers opening up their farms for visitors to discover what it means to be a farmer and see first hand how food is grown and produced.

Caroline Drummond, LEAF’s Chief Executive, added: “We are delighted to welcome The Co-operative Farms as one of the principal sponsors of Open Farm Sunday, which is the single, most-supported event in the farming calendar that celebrates British farming and the fantastic work our farmers do. I’m sure visitors to these farms will gain a fascinating insight, not just into The Co-operative Farms, but also the agricultural industry as a whole.”
