Bicton College students will play a vital role in bringing Farm Wise to the Devon County Show this year. Led by a team of volunteers from the land-based education provider, Farm Wise is an annual event that takes place at Westpoint Arena. A perfect pairing with the Devon County Show, the initiative offers school children the opportunity to learn about the importance of farming in Devon and where their food comes from.
Many of the students are volunteering for a second time, having already given their time freely at the Farm Wise Devon event last year. Level 3 Agriculture student Lily Tucker said: ‘I loved taking part so much, I wanted to volunteer again. The great thing about being at Bicton College is that you have a wide circle of friends and so it’s easy to pass the word around about an opportunity like this where you have the chance to teach others about something you love and feel passionate about. Luckily many of my friends signed up too!’
Taking place from 21st May – 23rd May, the Devon County Show is an historic event that celebrates agriculture. Attracting thousands each year, the show also aims to give children the opportunity to discover more about the countryside. Every year, students from a vast array of courses at Bicton College attend the show to help steward and run features.
Bicton College students taking part include team leader George from Dartmoor; Tristan who works on the Bicton College farm; James from Exeter who works on a farm in Clyst Hydon and Lily from Kingsbridge who is the Bicton College Young Farmers secretary. They will be helping pupils from schools all over Devon with a timetable of sessions to enjoy and learn from.
Some of the activities Farm Wise will be running at the county show are:
- Cooking Experience with Fun Kitchen
- Hands on Apple Juice Making
- Veg Planting & Quiz
- Looking after chicks, chickens, geese & quail
- Learn masses about milk and beef farming
- Jump on board, learn loads & do a competition
- The most spectacular sheep show ever!!
- Prize rides for quiz & completion winners
- Paddington bear will also be paying a visit and there will be a teddy bear picnic with marmalade sandwiches.
