The third annual Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association (RCAA) summer cattle and sheep points championships have been decided, capping off a fine summer showing season.
The championships, sponsored by and run by the RCAA, are based on the results from the cattle and sheep sections at five of Cornwall’s one day agricultural shows. Points are scored by those finishing in the top three places within relevant classes at Liskeard, Stithians, Camborne, Launceston and Camelford Shows.
The clear winner of this year’s cattle points champion were once again Mr & Mrs W R C & J E Christophers from Trenerry Farm, St Allen, near Truro. Amassing more than double the points than their closest rivals, the Christophers’ emphatically defended the title they also secured in 2012 and 2013. In second place were Graham & Lynn Pluess from Trevoulter Barton, Poundstock near, Bude.
It was much closer in the sheep section, with a repeat of the final result from the 2013 edition of the competition. Coming out on top once again in 2014 were Mr & Mrs Phillips from Restronguet near Falmouth, closely followed by Mrs G Renfree from Dannett Farm, Quethiock in second place.
Christopher Riddle, RCAA secretary said:
“We have enjoyed a fantastic summer agricultural showing season locally, with strong livestock entries, healthy attendances and we were of course blessed with a prolonged spell of fine weather.
“The Royal Cornwall Show will kick next year’s agricultural show season off in Cornwall again on 4th, 5th and 6th June 2015 and we very much hope all of the shows will enjoy another successful season.”
As the leaves begin to turn, minds turn to the RCAA’s winter points championships. Cattle and sheep exhibitors will set about accumulating the most points at Liskeard (Thursday 30 October), Helston (Monday 17 November), Wadebridge (Monday 24 November) and Truro (Wednesday 3 December) prime stock shows.
Look out for the Smithfield Festival December 4th/5th, the leading primestock event, where some of the countries best livestock will be shown. Visit www.eoesmithfield.co.uk for further details.
