David Jones’s young bull becomes the Phocle point of the National Horned Show!

Twelve months old Phocle Kingdom from David Jones, Phocle Herefords, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, took the Junior, Grand Male and Breed Championships at the National Horned Hereford Show, Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire.

“Kingdom” is by top herd sire Phocle Formula 1 and out of Phocle R15 Lady Linda 111V. Judge Mr John Douglas, Ervie Herefords, commented “This junior bull will go on to make a top herd sire in the future. He has great structure, excellent conformation and moves exceptionally well.”

It was another success for this historic herd, who has gained Championships over the past three centuries. In some ways it was the perfect swansong for David Jones, as on the 31st August the famous Phocle herd will have a Major Reduction Sale, which includes Phocle Kingdom. Standing Reserve to Phocle Kingdom was Intermediate and Grand Female Champion Sparkwood Dowager 2nd. Twenty three month old “Dowager 2nd” bred and exhibited by Mrs Lesley Jackson, Hertforshire, is all Mara breeding, out of Mara Dowager 15th and by Mara Flook. The show has become a firm favourite for Mrs Lesley Jackson, as year after year her cattle makes their mark particularly in the Female Section. Earlier in the day Mrs Jackson received the Edward Lewis Memorial Trophy for the Best Group of Five.

Standing Reserve to Phocle Kingdom in both the Junior & Grand Male Championships was another young bull, this time in the form of nine month old New House Kilo from Alistair McHarg, New House Herefords. “Kilo” is out of New House Curly 1st and by former National Show Grand Male Champion Haven Cavalier.

The Intermediate Male Championship went to 20 month old Ashford Whiskey from RJ & AL Webb, Ludlow, Shropshire with Haven Jazz taking the Reserve Championship. “Jazz” jointly owned by Messers Spooner & EL Lewis & Son is by the successful sire Mawarra Vice Admiral. In the Group of Three by the Same Sire, EL Lewis & Son came out on top with three animals by Mawarra Vice Admiral.

In the Senior Bull Class, it was a red letter day for South Staffordshire College with Rodbaston Ghillie being judged Senior Male Champion to the delight of Dr Sarah Winson and Showman Rob Ashmore. Three year old “Ghillie” is out of Llancillo Hall Hazel 23rd and by another Haven bull, this time Haven Dynamite. In Reserve was successful show bull Mara Freeman, exhibited by The Elms School, Malvern and beautifully prepared by Toni Spatcher and her team of enthusiastic helpers!

In the Female Classes standing Reserve to Sparkwood Dowager 2nd was Senior Female Champion and former National Hereford Show Champion Dieulacresse Dowager 20th from Messers Spooner, Staffordshire, with her strong bull calf at foot, sired by another former Supreme Champion Westwood Advancer.

The Reserve Senior Female Championship went to PRJ & LR Vincent, Pulham Herefords, Diss, Norfolk, with their 5 year old cow Clipston Diadem K5 with her calf at foot sired by Clipston Krespian.

In the Intermediate Female Championship, standing Reserve to Sparkwood Dowager 2nd was 14 month old Normanton Enoki K864 from TD & WT Livesey, Normanton Herefords, Leicestershire.

To complete the Female Classes, in the Junior Section the Championship went to AR Owen, Church Stretton, Shropshire with 10 month old Church Preen Prunella K042, out of Church Preen Prunella E005 by former National Junior & Intermediate Male Champion Church Preen Galileo. In Reserve was Boycefield Glance 10 from JW Lewis, Boycefield Herefords, Dilwyn, Herefordshire. There was more success for Boycefield Herefords when they won both the Best Pair of Heifer Calves and the Best Pair of Calves – one of each sex.

In the inaugural Breedplan Performance Recording Class and taking the Westaway Cup was WR Kemp & Sons, Bishop Auckland, with Auckvale Jackpot 1196J with Reserve Intermediate Male Champion Haven Jazz in Reserve.
