Maximise your herd’s genetic gain at the British Cattle Conference 2013

DairyCo is running an interactive workshop at the 68th annual British Cattle Conference to look at maximising your herd’s genetic gain.

DairyCo extension officer, Andy Dodd will run the workshop looking at the process of bull selection, evaluating your herd to maximise genetic gain and the facts you need to consider to maximise your financial returns, be it for crossbreeding or pure breeding. “The UK has a superbly diverse dairy industry,” says Andy, “but it’s vital to think about which cow is best suited to maximise the potential returns from the available markets.”

During the workshop

you will work in groups to make recommendations on a farm case-study that is looking to maximise its return by considering the type of milk contract and farming system. Is crossbreeding the solution, or will the right bull selection allow the desired return within a breed? You decide.

The workshop is also credited on the Dairy Pro scheme so an excellent opportunity to show your professionalism.

The annual British Cattle Conference will be held from 21 – 23 January 2013 at the Telford Golf and Spa Hotel. For more information about the conference or to book a place please visit: www.cattlebreeders.org.uk/conference/index.php5
