Frome Show drives on to top one day status

Frome Show is continuing its drive to become the West Country’s biggest one day showcase for cattle and sheep with more classes than ever before for both animals.

New to the cattle schedule this year are Longhorn and Lowline classes as are championships for the Best Overall Native Breed and Best Overall Continental Breed beef cattle. The sheep schedule has been boosted by new classes for Texel, Rouge/Roussin Charolais, Hampshire Down and Grey Face Dartmoor breeds.

Last year the show attracted almost 650 cattle entries and now with over 220 classes for cattle farmers and breeders and more than 60 for sheep owners to choose from, the organisers of the 2012 show, which takes place at the West Woodlands Showground on Saturday, September 8th, are looking forward to even more success this year.

Said cattle section chairman Tony Page: “The recent creation of the Livestock Village added a whole new dimension to the show and this has also led to a significant increase in the number of classes for sheep as well as cattle.

“We’ve gone even further this year, not only with the extra classes but also with a number of improvements to the site, especially with the doubling of the wash down facilities and improved water pressure. Undercover overnight lairage facilities will continue to be available as will bedding straw which will be provided free of charge.

“We have, of course, had to take note of the new TB rules for agricultural shows and it’s been confirmed that cattle coming to this year’s show will not be affected.”

He added: “The wet summer has led to the cancellation of a number of shows across the South West but this could mean a boost to our entries as farmers and breeders who have not been to Frome before look for other opportunities to parade their cattle and sheep before the judges.”

Schedules for the cattle and sheep classes can be downloaded from the show website, fromecheeseshow.co.uk. or are available from the show office at Rodden Road, Frome, BA11 2AH.”
