The Great Taste Awards, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, are now in their 18th year. It took 350 experts 34 days to blind taste all the entries and decide which entries would achieve the coveted gold awards.

Joseph Heler Cheese produce over 40 different cheeses, yet, it remains a family run business and a staunch protector of traditional English cheese-making values. The Great Taste award-winning Blue Cheshire is produced in their Laurels dairy, a traditional dairy that runs alongside the modern cheese rooms. Here, skilled cheese makers reproduce time honoured, hand crafted traditional cheeses that meet the increase in demand for quality local produce with provenance.

Joseph Heler have been producing Cheshire cheese since it originated in 1957. The famous, Blue Cheshire is created by introducing mould to the milk during the first stages of the cheese making process. The mould then comes to life when the cheese is pierced to allow air into the cheese and allow the areas around the piercing to blue. The result of this is a beautiful golden interior tinted with blue veins.

It is distinctively crumbly, creamy and rich, but milder in flavour compared to English Stilton, with a mellow piquant note.  Blue Cheshire has not been widely produced since the 1990s, but recent demand for the cheese has spurred a revival. Delicious on a ploughmans, melted over field mushrooms or steak, blended in a sauce or simply served with fresh bread.

Managing Director of Joseph Heler Cheese, Mike Heler, comments: The Great Taste Awards is the acknowledged benchmark for specialty food and drink manufacturers and customers alike. 7482 products were entered into this years awards, so to receive recognition for one of our much loved and signature cheese is something that we are very proud of.
