Wadebridge Prime Stock and Produce Show success continues after relocating to its current home within the Exhibition Halls at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre

As the final throes of summer play out plans are being put in place that will see a Cornish agricultural event with a long, proud history being revamped ahead of its 137th year. Wadebridge Prime Stock and Produce Show will now form part of a wider food and farming event, The Cornish Winter Fair, which organisers hope will attract an even larger attendance and participation.

A mainstay of the winter events calendar in the County for well over a century, the Wadebridge Prime Stock and Produce Show was held for the majority of its history in the town’s cattle market and town hall. Despite the loss of Wadebridge cattle market the event’s success continued after relocating to its current home within the Exhibition Halls at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre, home of the Royal Cornwall Show, on the outskirts of the town.

Not afraid of change, the show’s organisers are hoping to encourage more people to take part in the myriad of competitive classes that are the backbone of the event. They include cattle and sheep showing, to fruit and vegetables, dairy produce, cookery, handicrafts, floral art, home-made wine, liqueurs and honey. There are also competitive children’s, Young Farmers Club and WI sections.

The first big change is the day. Traditionally held on a Monday, the town’s original market day, the new Cornish Winter Fair has moved and will be held this year on Saturday 21st November.

Honorary show Secretary Chris Riddle said: “The show’s committee don’t wish to rest on their laurels and are keen to make sure this successful event continues to grow and evolve. We hope moving the event to a Saturday will enable even more people to take part.”

Admission to the event will now be free of charge and there will be even more reason for the general public to pay a visit, with a vastly increased array of things to see and do.

“As well as the traditional competitive elements of the prime stock show we are adding so much more to the event,” added Mr Riddle. “We’ve double the amount of available indoor space, so we’re adding a section where families can learn, hands on, about local farming and food production. There will be chance to get up close to an array of farm animals and fun things to have a go at.”

A range of quality local food and drink producers will be showcasing their products with the opportunity to try and buy, and also local craft stalls selling their wares. The event is perfectly timed for those wanting to get a head start with their Christmas shopping.

Mr Riddle concluded: “The Cornish Winter Fair will be a real celebration of local farming and food, the invitation is open to one and all to come along to enjoy what will prove to a be a great day out.”
