Electric solution for trolleys
Award winning Whitehall Garden Centre in Lacock started life in 1968 with a shed on the farm that had been in the Self family since 1894.
Mrs. Phyllis Self MBE, at 104 years of age, is Britain’s oldest boss. Today the centre turns over around £8 million to £9 million a year and boasts one of the largest selections of outdoor plants in the South West.
Each week thousands of bedding plants arrive on metal Dutch/Danish trolleys and these have to be quickly moved around the site to get the plants into place. “Staff used to have to push the trolleys and that was physically demanding, especially as we have steep slopes to contend with,” says Plant Manager Simon Lowe.
They found a solution in an EPS 200T electric transporter from Electric Powered Solutions. “Alan Munn from EPS brought us two or three types to trial and developed a special hook for the trolley,” Simon says “and we were under no pressure, we trialled for a week to make sure the ladies could use it.”
The EPS 200T has tiller steering and a work capacity of up to 6 hours. It’s suitable for loads of up to 500Kg plus a towing capacity of 1000kg and is equipped with two front tractor wheels (optional smooth wheels available for indoor use) and two rear pivot wheels with an oscillation arm, which gives it good balance and grip, ideal for transporting over uneven ground.
It is also compact and easy to manouevre around the centre. Simon adds they have already seen increased productivity and that now everyone wants to put a trolley out.
