Tong Peal, the UKs leading designer and manufacturer of handling and sorting equipment for the vegetable handling industry, has introduced the UKs first combined washing and polishing vegetable cleaning system.

Tong Peals Spray Washer innovately combines washing and polishing to increase efficiency and deliver optimum flexibility and control over crop cleaning.

Unlike conventional barrel washers, the Spray Washers high pressure, high volume spray bar and adjustable barrel incline ensures that crops are not immersed in water, but instead are washed by fresh water through the powerful spray jets therefore receiving an improved wash quality. The spray bar can also be fed directly by recycled water from a customers own water treatment plant or from one of Tong Peals water tanks.

The unique design also allows greater polishing flexibility for growers processing differing types of vegetables throughout the year, as it incorporates a range of polishing tools, including an interchangeable brush, rubber pintle or plane stainless steel barrel plates. The Washer also features a pneumatic air bag to alter the angle of the variable-speed barrel.

A key feature of the design is the removal of the end plates an area where stones and debris can get trapped and cause maintenance problems.

The washer is available in 2, 3, 4 and 4.5 metre barrel lengths, with expected outputs of between 3 and 25 tonnes per hour.

The newly developed stainless steel Cyclone Destoner System has also been introduced as part of the new range.

An advancement on conventional fluidised bed systems, the state-of-the art Cyclone enables highly efficient stone/clod separation. By utilising a heavy-duty impeller pump to create water turbulence, the stones are forced to the bottom of the tank and removed via a side elevator. This process enables the crop to become buoyant and to be flumed out of the destoner to the next stage of the washing cycle.

Available as a stand alone unit, which can be seamlessly fitted into an existing set up or integrated into a new line, the system is available in sizes ranging from 1.2 to 3.0 metres in diameter, can handle all crop sizes and is capable of throughputs from 10 to 50 tonnes/hour.

Tong Peals new pack house washing range has been designed with the highest levels of efficiency, productivity and space saving in mind, said Edward Tong, operations director at Tong Peal Engineering. We are dedicated to providing high quality and flexible equipment which really meets the needs of growers and the pack house.
