Twenty one year old Willls Oakden from Newburgh near Fife has been selected to ride for Britain as part of the British Young Rider Team at the 2011 Young Rider European Championships at Blair Castle in Perthshire, Scotland.  This year, the British Young Rider Team will be defending their sixth successive European team gold medal* on British turf.

Following a squad training camp over the weekend, twelve British riders aged between 19 and 21 went to Scotland. Following todays Veterinary inspection, Wills has been selected to ride as part of a team of four whereas the remaining 8 riders will ride as individuals.

Full time rider Wills  will be riding Mrs Cindy Onslow from Roxburghshires ten year old bay gelding Button Clover.

The competition takes place over four days and is akin to triathlon whereby horses and rider must complete three phases. The dressage competition is spread out over Thursday and Friday. Saturday is cross-country and Sunday is show jumping where the horses jump in reverse order to the results achieved on Saturday.

The competitor rides the same horse throughout the competition and can only represent the team on one horse. Each horse is trotted up at the initial veterinary inspection before the competition begins and also on the morning after the cross country competition. Horses that are considered unfit to continue into the third phase of the competition may undergo further inspection or be withdrawn from the competition.

Chairman of the Young Rider squad, Alex Colquhoun says: Being part of the building blocks of young riders Eventing careers is just so fantastic; we have seen riders such as William Fox-Pitt, Zara Phillips, Piggy French and Tina Cook go from successful young riders to senior team medalists.See photos and biogs from this years squad on our booklet free for download on http://bit.ly/ooouhP
