From My Farm donate 10k fruit and veg to FareShare

frommyfarm

From My Farm, the leading supplier of regionally sourced produce, brought some festive cheer to the homeless and other deserving causes with the donation of 10,000 worth of fruit and vegetables.

The donation was made via community food network charity FareShare, which normally collects food that will otherwise go to waste and works in conjunction with homeless charity Crisis. The Christmas donation was the first in a developing partnership between From My Farm and FareShare to provide grade A seasonal produce to needy causes such as homeless shelters, womens refuges, luncheon clubs for the elderly and after school clubs for children around the country.

From My Farm take their social and environmental responsibilities seriously and are committed to supporting local communities and worthy causes. They donate one penny from every single pack sold to The Growing Trust. The Trust supports activities that have a particular focus on agriculture, education, community involvement and environmental initiatives, such as FareShare.

From My Farm also works alongside FareShare in cutting carbon emissions. From My Farm only supplies seasonal produce farmed in the same region in which it is sold which saves produce travelling across the country to a central depot before being redistributed. From My Farm instead has regional hubs in Scotland, the South West, East of England and Yorkshire. FareShare similarly splits its distribution between regional depots. This Christmas From My Farm delivered 200 cases of King Edward potatoes, and 400 cases of carrots, parsnips and brown onions to FareShare hubs in Birmingham, London, Merseyside, the North East and West Yorkshire.

From My Farm Commercial Manager, Rick Sanderson said: We are passionate about supporting worthy causes that have a positive impact within the regions we source from. We are truly excited about our partnership with FareShare as it is such a win-win for everyone involved. Not only do we help some of the most needy in society through combating food poverty, but we also support our sustainability targets at the same time. We see this as the start of a long-term partnership and are excited to see where we can take it.

FareShare Food Sourcing Coordinator Amy Cohen said: This great supply of food came in in the run up to Christmas, allowing our Community Members to prepare some lovely seasonal cooked veg for their clients. There is an obvious synergy between ourselves and From My Farm and we are very much looking forward to an ongoing partnership.

  • From My Farm carried out a snapshot survey of 4 different supermarket fruit and vegetable shopping baskets each across three regions in the UK, totalling 12 different baskets. This showed that the average From My Farm produce travels 91 miles compared to the average conventional supermarket produce line of 231 miles, a saving of 140 food miles on one item. If you made the swap to From My Farm all year long, you would make a saving of a staggering 29,000 food miles. Figure based on one shopping basket, containing four items.
  • FareShare addresses food poverty in the UK by redistributing quality surplus food from the food industry to a network of 600 community organisations across the UK. All the food is in-date and good to eat, but has become surplus for simple reasons such as over-production or labelling errors. Every day an average of 29,000 people benefit from the service FareShare provides
