Helmet sale could spark interest in metal detecting says CLA

cla_logo

With news that the Crosby Garrett Roman Helmet, found on farmland in May, has sold at auction for 2 Million, the CLA is warning landowners to prepare for an increase in the already popular hobby of metal detecting.

The Association says that Landowners should make sure they are familiar with the law before allowing metal detectorists on their land, and has published an advisory handbook Metal Detecting and the Treasure Act 1996 that contains a pro forma Metal Detecting Licence that landowners should use to ensure they maintain their interest in any finds.

Douglas Chalmers, Director CLA North, said: While such finds are extremely rare, no-one can be certain what is underneath any bit of land, and Im sure that this element of excitement helps to make the activity so popular. Responsible metal detectorists can unearth much that contributes to our heritage and helps to enrich the history of any given area, but landowners must have control over all activities on their property. I cannot emphasis too strongly the importance of taking professional advice, to avoid costly legal battles in the future, and to discourage trespass.

This high profile event will make both landowners and detectorists wonder what else can be found, but taking simple steps now, before any activity commences, will give all parties piece of mind.

CLA Members can, of course, contact our Legal Advisers, and anyone can purchase our Advisory Handbook.
