R-Biopharm Rhône, one of Scotland’s most successful scientific exporters, has further expanded its global reach with a new sister company in India which will act as a gateway to wider Asian markets.

It is the latest international venture for the Glasgow-based company, which is a leading developer of test solutions for food and feed analysis, manufacturing test kits that offer high precision and accuracy.

R-Biopharm Rhône, which posted record sales and profits last year on the back of international growth, already has sister companies in the USA, Italy, France, Spain, Australia, Argentina, Brazil and China.

The creation of the new Indian company follows the acquisition of one of R-Biopharm Rhône’s distributors in the subcontinent.

Product Manager Claire Milligan, who is overseeing the Indian integration, said: “Our products test for mycotoxins, which are found in a huge variety of food and which can have a devastating impact on the human body.

“In Asia, a big area of interest for mycotoxin testing is in the spice industry, particularly for aflatoxin and ochratoxin. Aflatoxin, one of the most potent toxins, causes liver cancer. Ochratoxin, found in cereals, dried fruit, coffee, wine and spices, causes kidney cancer.”

R-Biopharm Rhône has a number of suitable test kits available for testing spices so the aim is to work with R-Biopharm India and distributors from the sub-continent in order to increase business. Other opportunities are being explored in Malaysia, Indonesia, China and elsewhere

Simon Bevis, Managing Director, said: “We have been very encouraged by continuing successes in markets abroad. Sales in Asia are up by 50% to 60%, in Latin America we have seen a 50% increase and they are up significantly in Eastern Europe.

“Expansion into the Indian market, which has enormous potential, creates a whole new range of exciting export opportunities.”

The company, which is based in the West of Scotland Science Park in Glasgow, now has a headcount of more than 50, the highest total in its 25-year history. It is now the biggest and most profitable subsidiary of its parent company, German diagnostics company R-Biopharm AG.
