Farmers and landowners have the chance to discuss new opportunities on renewable energy with ADAS specialists at this years Royal Welsh Show.  With the introduction of the new feed in tariffs introduced in April 2010, ADAS is finding increasing interest from landowners on the possibility of installing renewable energy generation on farm to create an additional income source for the farm business.

This is an opportunity to maximise farm resources and to look at harnessing the potential to create sustainable energy on farm and lowering carbon emissions said Cate Barrow, ADAS Wales Group Manager.

Each farm has different resources and facilities available to it, thus we should be looking at the potential to add value to what is being produced on farm and to help strengthen the business position by looking at suitable alternatives which would help create alternative income streams.

ADAS partners Dulas engineering Ltd will also have engineering specialists on the ADAS stand to discuss practical issues and problems encountered when developing renewable options.  Staff on the stand will also be giving guidance on how to proceed with proposals.

ADAS are also featuring the services which they offer to farmers as part of the Welsh Assemblys Farming Connect services.  These include consultancy help available to look at Business issues and may involve planning, resource management, manure management plans, design services on dirty water and slurry management, nutrient plans, technical advice on farming enterprises and business plans for young farmers under the Young Entrant Support Scheme (YESS).  For farmers who are in Catchment Sensitive Farming areas ADAS provides advice and solutions on nutrient use and organic waste solutions, as well as NVZ advice to farmers in Wales who have to also comply with these regulations.

With applications for the new Glastir agri-environmental scheme needing to be completed in October, farmers need to prepare their plans during the summer and early autumn.  ADAS consultants will be able to explain what is needed in order that the plan meets the aims of the scheme and fit in with the farming systems adopted on farm.

ADAS organic consultants will also be present to give advice on the Organic Centre Wales stand in conjunction with other delivery partners.  ADAS experience shows that there is not one right answer for every business, with the need to capture skills and adaptability of staff and managers to the changing demands made on Agriculture.

These are some of the reasons why it will be worth discussing plans and opportunities with ADAS at this years Royal Welsh Show.
