Red Poll cattle exported to Ireland

The first Red Poll cattle to be exported from the UK for 50 years have arrived in Ireland.  The sale of the animals, 32 heifers and a bull, to 12 buyers located in the north and south of the country, is a major stepping stone in a project launched by the Red Poll Cattle Society three years ago to re-establish the breed in Ireland.

The Red Poll, a dual purpose animal, at one time enjoyed an enviable record for winning the top prizes in meat and milk classes at leading shows.  Now there is a revival of interest in the breed which can fatten economically and produce excellent quality beef, while milking cows continue production through an impressive number of lactations.

Several of the heifers which left East Anglia for Ireland were sired by Oak House Ulysses, champion junior bull at the Royal Show in 2007 and breed champion at the Suffolk Show in 2008 and 2009.

Ben Woolf, a member of the breed societys council said: We hope this move will open the door to further exports to Ireland and other countries.  The Red Poll is ideally suited to the extensive grass based farming systems that are prevalent in Ireland and other parts of the world.
