Public Vote For New EU Organic Logo
Members of the public are being given the opportunity to cast their vote in the final stages of an EU-wide competition to select a new EU organic logo. Three logos are now under consideration and voters have until 31 January 2010 to make their choice at: http://ec.europa.eu/agriculture/organic/logo/index.htm.
The new logo will enhance consumer protection and promote organic farming. Unlike the current logo, the winning entry will be obligatory for all pre-packaged organic products that derive from the 27 EU member states and meet the labelling standards.
” The European Commission wants to ensure that the new logo appeals to as many people as possible whilst simultaneously allowing the selection process to contribute to making people aware of the importance of the organic farming sector “, said Mariann Fischer Boel, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development.
A design competition organised by European Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development took place earlier this year, involving design and art students from all over Europe. More 3,420 future designers submitted their innovative proposals which were judged by an internationally renowned jury before the final three logos were chosen.
The remit for the new logo was to represent the EU both inside and outside its borders, with ease of recognition and association with the EU and organic farming without using any words or letters.
