Green-Fingered Kids Discover The Joys Of Gardening With Potting Parties

Children are set to go vegetable crazy this summer with the launch of the
Potting Party, the latest activity to keep kids occupied during the summer
holidays.

The parties give children the chance to choose some of the plants they have
always wanted to grow from a range of vegetables, fruits and herbs and
plant them out in their own decorated pots.

from baby plants, pots, compost and stickers as well as tips on how to keep
plants growing after the celebration.

Party-goers can pick from easy to grow lettuce to strawberries and herbs
like mint, all of which are available on the Urban Allotments site.
Children can also get creative by painting and decorating their pots or
having fun with the packs easy to use stickers.

Part of the proceeds of each party order is to be donated to Acorns
Children’s Hospice in the West Midlands and its planned to arrange a
free potting party for children at the hospice later on in the year.

The potting parties are really great fun and provide a new twist to the
traditional childrens party. Itll give kids the chance to have a go
at something new which many of them have always wanted to do, said
Sarah Kent from West Midlands-based Urban Allotments.

Theyre the ultimate green party and hopefully by enjoying the party
children will get interested in growing their own and start thinking about
where food comes from.

At the end the children get a party bag with a difference, containing
their plant instead of just the usual sweets. So instead of lasting two
minutes it should last the rest of the season, said Sarah.

The children are so proud of their creations and for once cant wait
to get home to put their pot in the garden.

The idea is that children can have their own salad plants, to pick
directly from their garden to put on their plate or pick some herbs and
spices for their pizza or curry.

Hopefully children will see how easy and tasty it is to grow their own,
which leads on to helping reduce food waste and cut the environmental
impact of buying all our food, she said.

Urban Allotments, which has been set up from Minsterley near Shrewsbury,
and Sutton Coldfield, encourage and support gardening novices to grow their
own food no matter what little growing space they have or how little

The launch of the Potting Parties builds upon the success Urban Allotments
have already had in encouraging young people to get involved in growing
