Steak Tasting Challenge Proves ASDA Beef Is Top Quality
C E Exton & Son have won the coveted title of supreme champion in the final leg of ASDAs Extra Special steak tasting challenge at the Yorkshire Show.
A packed ASDA stand watched the final cook-off late yesterday afternoon, where the ten steaks selected for the final challenge were judged by celebrity chef Brian Turner and ASDA chef Simon Shaw for their flavour, succulence and tenderness.
The Extons winning steak was from a 25 month old Limousin cross heifer and had a carcass grading of U. The Extons run a mixed farm at Wheldrake, south of York where they fatten approximately 1000 1200 mainly continental heifers each year.
ASDA Yorkshire beef suppliers who entered the competition initially sent cattle to Anglo Beef Processors (ABP) York, where primal joints were matured for 28 days before the final steaks were prepared.
ASDA senior red meat buyer Jim Viggars said: The judges were very impressed with the standard of all the steaks and had praise for the Yorkshire beef producers who had entered the competition. We had more entries than ever this year and the winning steak proves you can have conformation without sacrificing eating quality. ASDA are proud to support their farmer suppliers and will continue to help them produce the highest quality beef.
Chef Brian Turner added: Every one of the steaks presented was of an excellent standard and offered consistency so it was a difficult task to choose the overall winner.
ASDA category director for meat, fish and poultry Rick Bourne, presented Mr John Exton from C E Exton & Son with his prize of 500 worth of ASDA vouchers and an engraved cut glass decanter. Farmers Richard Elliott and Richard Moore took second and third place respectively.
