All I Want for Christmas is Carrots
Ask anyone about which veg they associate with Christmas and it’s pretty much guaranteed to be Brussels sprouts. But did you know retail sales of carrots in the week running up to Christmas Day are double that of sprouts. Last year 8,809,000kgs of carrots were sold in the week ending 26 December compared to a mere 4,716,000kgs of sprouts.
It’s time our little orange friend got the recognition it deserves and moved out of the shadow of its spherical green rival, that, let’s face it, no one actually eats except during the festive season!
Chairman of the British Carrot Growers’ Association Martin Evans, who farms in Nottinghamshire said: “The sheer quantity bought and consumed around the Christmas period speaks volumes about the British love affair with the carrot. They’re healthy, good value, easy to cook and liked by practically everyone so it’s not surprising that carrots are on almost every dining table on 25 December. What’s more if there’s snow this year, you’ll need a carrot for your snowman’s nose!”
31% of carrot sales in December took place w/e 26 Dec
Carrot retail sales comparison:
