Bayer launches brand new rodenticide in time for autumn battle

As outside temperatures drop, daylight levels fall, and harvested maize crops come off the fields, the battle of this autumns rodent control programmes commence across many of the countrys livestock units.

But for farmers faced with increasing problems of rodent resistance and an armoury waning in effectiveness, they now have access to a brand new rodenticide, Rodilon being launched by Bayer at DE&LS 2011.

Farmers have not had anything significantly new to add to their defence armoury for a considerable time now and no new active ingredients for well over 20 years, explains Bayers national account manager for rural hygiene, Ken Black.

The active ingredient in Rodilon, difethialone, has never been used for rodent control in the UK before, so it represents a real breakthrough for those who have been facing the increasingly difficult task of gaining rodent control, he says.

The estimated cost to UK farmers as a result of rodent damage has been reported as reaching as much as a staggering 25 million a year, advises Ken.

And livestock units are particularly prone to heavy infestations, providing the ideal environment for these highly adaptive creatures. Buildings provide shelter, access to water and plentiful supplies of stored feedstuffs a particular attraction to rats and mice as well as a warm and secure nesting site over winter, he explains.

With each farm set up being different, the need for a range of control solutions to be effective against rat and mice infestations has been recognised within Bayers Rodilon range. Available in four convenient and extremely palatable bait formulations including grain based baits, blocks and sachets users can match the product to fit with the usual food source available on that particular farm, he says.

Mr Black adds the new bait is a highly palatable, second generation rodenticide with just one feed enough to administer a lethal dose; helping achieve rapid control of all rodent infestations, even those resistant to traditional baits.

Rodilon is available now, in a range of pack sizes, in all good agricultural merchants and country supplies stores.

Ideal for rat control, Rodilon Wheat Tech uses the highest quality wholewheat grain making it extremely palatable and increases consumption and is suited to difficult to control infestations throughout a wide range of indoor farm baiting situations.

Also particularly suited to rats, Rodilon Blocks are moisture and mould resistant so ideal for hot and damp conditions.  With multiple edges, the Blocks are designed specifically to encourage rodents to gnaw and therefore feed for longer.  Rodilon Blocks are an ideal choice if spillage or contamination risks are a concern.

Rodilon Trio is mice specific and incorporates oats, sunflower seeds and maize known to be highly palatable to mice and because they have a tendency to remove the grain husk before consumption the Turbo Impregnation process is particularly beneficial.

The fourth product formulation is Rodilon Soft Blocks which are suitable for mice and rats and are most suited to situations where there are other sources of food available.  Containing high food grade ingredients in pre-measured sachets, Rodilon Soft Blocks negate the need to handle the bait directly.
