Young Food Writer of the Year Announced
Eleven-year-old Joseph Wigley from Somerset has won the 2011 WriteIt! competition, fighting off stiff competition from many aspiring young food writers.
This annual competition, organised by the Guild of Food Writers, is open to entrants aged up to 18 years old. Entrants were asked to write a descriptive piece of about 1,000 words, either fiction or non-fiction and based on a food-related subject. Josephs feature entitled Mad about Marrows! delighted the judges with its originality and impressive use of descriptive language.
The judges, Karen Barnes (editor of delicious magazine), Matthew Fort (food writer for The Guardian) and Bee Wilson (author and food columnist for The Sunday Telegraph’s Stella magazine), were also impressed with Josephs engaging love of growing and eating his own fresh produce, which he successfully evoked through his writing. Home-schooled, Joseph has won a laptop, as well as the opportunity to have his entry printed in delicious, so look out for the November issue.
The judges also highly commended Aisha Abdel-Samie, aged 9, from Ellsmere Port; Kathryn Espino, aged 14, from London; and Andrew Carrick, aged 14 from County Armagh, who all won a selection of cookery books.
