Farmers to benefit from new nitrogen fertiliser

Farmers stand to save around 10% of their nitrogen application costs when using a new fertiliser on the UK market. K?N, launched by Koch Fertiliser Ltd, is urea-based and contains Agrotain, a globally recognised and EC-registered urease inhibitor which prevents volatilisation, a process whereby nitrogen losses occur to the air.

Containing 46% nitrogen, K?N has 33% more nutrient when compared to ammonium nitrates (AN) 34.5%. By considering the actual contents of your fertiliser, and the cost per unit of nitrogen and not cost per tonne of product, farmers stand to profit from a more effective fertiliser programme with K?N, advises Simon Borthwick of Koch.

Although buying a tonne bag of K?N may appear more expensive on paper than ammonium nitrate, it actual offers a cost saving of at least 10% for each unit of nitrogen, he adds.

According to research carried out in the Defra NT26 project on nitrogen fertiliser behaviour, the K?N concept of treated urea proved to be of equal agronomic performance to AN, including its ability to give similar yields and protein levels. This study should reassure farmers that K?N will perform excellently in all UK field conditions where they would traditionally have applied AN.

In addition to K?Ns lower cost per unit of nitrogen, it also offers further benefits. With a lower density, K?N allows farmers to spread more nitrogen with a lesser weight of fertiliser, so reducing ground compaction per pass. Add to this, there will be less bags to dispose of, plus none of the storage and handling restrictions that AN suffers from, and K?N becomes the obvious choice for a cost effective nitrogen application programme.

Simon Borthwick adds: K?N gives farmers so much more than improved value per unit of nitrogen, and its other benefits should not be ignored. Based on urea, which is a globally-traded commodity, K?N innovation addresses volatilisation issues and delivers excellent agronomic performance to match AN.

Koch Fertiliser refers to Koch Fertiliser Ltd. Koch Fertiliser is an affiliate of US based Koch Fertilizer, LLC. Koch Fertilizer, LLC and its affiliates produce, distribute and globally market nitrogen fertilisers, including anhydrous ammonia, urea, nitric acid, UAN solutions, ammonium nitrate solution, ammonium polyphosphate and ammonium thiosulfate. The companys fertiliser interests have the capability of producing more than 10 million metric tonnes of fertiliser products annually.

Koch Fertilizer, LLC is an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Koch Industries, Inc. (www.kochind.com) one of the largest private companies in America.

Agrotain International, LLC is the worlds largest producer of StabilizedNitrogenTM fertilisers containing proprietary nitrogen stabiliser technology to reduce nitrogen loss from urea and UAN, and extend plant-available nitrogen for healthier plants and higher yields. This award-winning technology has a proven track record, backed by worldwide research studies. Agrotain Internationals products are currently licensed and sold through agriculture, turf and ornamental or industrial partners in more than 70 countries. Agrotain Internationals headquarters are in St Louis, Mo., USA.

K?N fertiliser is a nitrogen fertiliser based on urea with Agrotain technology. Agrotain stabilises nitrogen from loss such as volatilisation to ensure fertilisers are retained in the soil and available to fuel crop productivity. K?N fertiliser is in the same performance category as AN. The technology was proven in UK trials by ADAS, IGER/ Rothamsted Research, AFBI, and featured by two speakers at the 2009 International Fertiliser Society Conference in London. Agrotain technology was reviewed and registered after meeting EU fertiliser requirements.

“K?N” is a registered trademark of Koch Fertilizer Trading Sarl and Koch Advanced Nitrogen is a trademark of Koch Industries, Inc., each used under license.
