BOCM PAULS increases production in Scotland

bocm_pauls

BOCM PAULS, the UKs leading animal feed manufacturer, has reported a considerable increase in the level of its retail business in Scotland over the last five years, running counter to the trend experienced by many companies in the livestock sector over the same period.

The market leader in terms of all-round manufacturing quality and standards of technical advice, BOCM PAULS says that in 2010 its combined feed retail volume increased by 12 per cent compared with 2005, across the same geographical area. In addition, during the same period, the company almost doubled its customer base and retail tonnage of co-products.

Providing a full range of innovative products, including minerals, for all the major classes of livestock, BOCM PAULS has 11 animal-feed mills. Located strategically throughout the UK they have benefited from a high level of investment during the past 10 years, ensuring that the company now has the most modern, well-equipped manufacturing plants in the country. In addition to its compound mill at Penrith, BOCM PAULS also operates blend plants at Brydekirk in Dumfries and Galloway and Turriff in Aberdeenshire, together with a toll manufacturing arrangement at Drumlithie in Aberdeenshire. Farmers benefit from a distribution network which, the company claims is second to none in the industry, providing greater flexibility in terms of deliveries.

A key part of BOCM PAULS development in Scotland has been the loyalty of the merchant trade and the introduction of a completely new structure within the company, which includes a young team of highly-trained and experienced Account Managers who focus on the requirements of larger customers. The company also operates a Telesales Team which is based at Motherwell and deals with smaller retail customers, together with a Customer Services Team at Annan in Dumfries.

Account Managers are trained to very high standards and have completed a comprehensive in-house training programme, together with additional courses which are organised by external organisations such as Wood Park Farm, part of the University of Liverpools Leahurst veterinary campus. The considerable financial investment which BOCM PAULS has made in training has gained the company enormous credibility with farmers throughout the UK as it has enabled Account Managers to add real value to their businesses through delivery of the very latest technical advice and information in a practical, easy-to-understand form.

Innovation has also played a major part in the companys expansion in Scotland, following the introduction of a number of new products and services.

To help dairy farmers to improve herd performance BOCM PAULS has invested significant resources into developing its new Feed to Milk (F2M) programme, an easy-to-implement system which incorporates the companys total approach to nutrition. It is now working very closely with dairy farmers to help them put the system into practise, because even small improvements in this area of production generate significantly better returns.

BOCM PAULS growth has been assisted by the addition of new products such as Lintec, a revolutionary ruminant feed product which the company claims improves animal health, milk production and fertility, with additional benefits for human health and the environment. The product is based on a special variety of linseed that has been bred to have very high levels of Omega 3, similar to fresh, spring grass.

This special linseed is processed using a specific combination of temperature and pressure to produce a natural feed that works within the cow to subtly change its metabolism and fatty acid synthesis in the rumen and udder. As a result, saturated fat levels in the milk are reduced and the product generates other positive nutritional benefits for cows in much the same way that Omega 3 assists human nutrition.

We are delighted with the progress that BOCM PAULS has made in Scotland during the last five years, at a time of considerable contraction within the overall livestock industry and associated supply sector, comments Grant Spittal, Sales Manager for BOCM PAULS in Scotland. The key to achieving this success has been to introduce innovative products and services which combine to generate measurable financial benefits for livestock farmers.

BOCM PAULS manufactures, sells and distributes more than two million tonnes of animal feed per year. With an annual turnover exceeding 400 million, it is an independent, privately owned business which is controlled by the management team. Headquartered in Ipswich, Suffolk, the company employs 900 staff across its 19 locations throughout the UK.
