Tim Bennett receives 2011 Dairy UK Award

The 2011 Dairy UK Award has been awarded to Tim Bennett in recognition of his important contribution to the development of the UK dairy industry.

Mr Bennett is currently Chairman of DairyCo. He also sits on the board of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board.

For the last two years, Mr Bennett has chaired the Dairy Supply Chains Environmental Roadmap Group. During this time the Roadmap has been developed to the point that it has become not only the most successful industry environmental management scheme in all of UK agriculture, but arguably anywhere in the world.

On presenting Mr Bennett with his award, Dairy UK Chairman Robert Wiseman said: Tims contribution to the dairy industry, over many years, has been as a genuine leader, in a number of organisations and positions where decisions affecting the future prosperity of dairy farmers, and indeed the dairy industry are taken.

So quite clearly, his commitment to the dairy industry is enormous and his impact on our industry immense.

The award was made at the Dairy UK conference dinner held at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Birmingham on 5th September.

A first generation farmer, Tim Bennett had a Pedigree Holstein dairy herd for 27 years and then an Aberdeen Angus breeding and store cattle unit. The farm, which also for many years ran an egg laying unit selling all product direct to consumers, converted to organic production in 2008.

Deputy President and then President of the National Farmers Union of England and Wales between 1998 and 2006, Mr Bennett was also a governor of the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research between 2000 and 2006.

Mr Bennett is Vice Chairman of the Food Standards Agency (FSA), a member of the FSAs Risk and Audit committees, a member of the Agricultural Land Tribunal in Wales and a trustee for the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group.
