Multi award winning cheese maker, Joseph Heler, have received a Halal accreditation, not only making their cheese available to the British Muslim community, but also opening doors to export markets in Asia and worldwide. Working with the European Halal Development Agency, the UKs largest independent cheese manufacturer has been evaluated and found to meet the requirements of Islamic Shariah and as such, their cheese is now classified as Halal.
The European Halal Development Agency (EHDA) standard was produced by leading technical and religious experts. It ensures that all areas of Halal certification and auditing are covered from farm to plate to deliver 100% Halal assurance to the Muslim consumer. The accreditation covers most areas of Joseph Helers cheese production, including; block, grated, sliced and pre-packed cheese, as well as whey, cream and lactose concentrates.
Cheshire-based Joseph Heler Cheese took the decision several years ago to stop using the animal rennet used by so many other manufacturers throughout the world. Now every single cheese produced at the Cheshire-based creamery is made using a vegetarian coagulant from vegetable sources, a major factor in gaining the Halal accreditation.
Mark Beavon, Operations Director for Joseph Heler Cheese, comments: We have been striving to gain this accreditation for some time in an attempt to make our products available to as wide an audience as possible. With growing demand for British cheese overseas, this also allows us to take a giant leap into markets such as Asia and as such, exciting opportunities lay ahead.
Joseph Helers extensive selection of cheese means that there is something for all tastes, from regional varieties such as Double Gloucester and Red Leicester, through to the cheese produced in their traditional dairy such as White and Blue Cheshire. In an exciting twist, Joseph Heler also produce a wide range of continental style cheese, which are also Halal, including the delicious Gruyere, the perfect melting cheese.
