Wincanton and Dairy Crest partnership set to deliver carbon emission reductions of up to 1,100 tonnes
Wincanton, a leading European supply chain provider, and dairy food company Dairy Crest have today announced the completion of the roll-out of 36 new vehicles to improve the efficiency of milk collections from 1,350 farmers across the UK.
Wincanton works in partnership with Dairy Crest, the UKs leading chilled dairy foods company, to collect milk from farms across the UK and deliver it to Dairy Crest processing plants, where it is then distributed to customers. As part of a drive to boost efficiency, Wincanton has recently completed the roll-out of 36 new vehicles with a range of innovative features designed to make collections and deliveries more efficient. These features include a new pump which provides increased fuel efficiencies and a reduction in carbon emissions of up to 53 tonnes per annum.
The new vehicles also allow more volume to be collected due to greater capacity created through the use of draw bar combinations. As a consequence, fewer vehicles are required, scheduling is improved, fuel is reduced by around 160,000 litres and carbon emissions are reduced by around 425 tonnes per annum. The vehicles will also be installed with an Isotrak telematics system, which will deliver further carbon emission savings of up to 183 tonnes per annum.
Commenting on the newly designed tanker trailers, Chris Kingshott, managing director at Wincanton, said: The pumping system increases the speed at which milk collections are conducted, which improves efficiency and reduces carbon emissions. The vehicles also have a five minute idle shut-down device, which can reduce fuel consumption and therefore carbon emissions by up to 439 tonnes per annum. These new features will help to enhance Wincantons position as one of the market leaders in dairy distribution operations.
Mark Taylor, Group Milk Procurement Director at Dairy Crest said: Wincantons continuous improvement approach to our business has enabled us to add value to our operations and the service we offer our suppliers and customers. Carbon reduction is a key objective within our corporate responsibility strategy, and we are delighted to be working in partnership with a company that shares our values.
The vehicles also have new safety features including a rear camera system which will help to maximise the safety of milk delivery operations. Wincantons safety record was recently recognised at the Prince Michael Awards, which provides public recognition to those who have improved road safety in the UK.
