Retailer signs 4 year contract with processors…

This week, Morrisons has renewed its fresh milk contract with milk processors, Arla and Dairy Crest. The deal will guarantee that the retailers fresh milk supply will come from the two processors until February 2015.

The move is part of Morrisons ongoing support for British farming and demonstrates their future vision and pledge to secure a sustainable British milk supply long term.

Martyn Jones, Morrisons Group Trading Director, said: This latest deal further strengthens our commitment to support UK dairy farming. This provides long term security to a large number of dairy farmers supplying these two major processors.

The news means that the supermarkets customers can continue to purchase any own label Morrisons fresh milk safe in the knowledge that it is 100% British and that all of Morrisons standard milk is sourced from regional farmers.

National Farmers Union (NFU) dairy board chairman, Mansel Raymond has welcomed the move. At a time when retailers retendering their liquid milk contracts is being blamed for driving value out of the supply chain, I am greatly encouraged by Morrisons decision to sign such a long term contract with its two milk suppliers.

By renewing its contract for a four year period Morrisons has created a real opportunity to develop a more structured approach to its supply base. By getting closer to its dairy farmer suppliers Morrisons can secure its milk supply, generate stability and help to build farmers confidence in the long-term viability of the British dairy industry.

Morrisons, alone among the major supermarkets, already sources 100% British fresh beef, lamb, pork and poultry and this move to maintain their 100% British fresh milk supply can only further increase their commitment to offering fresh, British produce nationwide as well as supporting British farming.

Morrisons has also established a dairy farmers producer group in conjunction with its processors, to develop closer links with dairy farmers and to help reduce their production costs.

Morrisons has committed to sourcing milk from nine regions of England: North East, North West, South West, Yorkshire and Humberside, Heart of England, East of England and South East and Scotland and Wales.

Morrisons fresh milk is 100% British as part of the companys commitment to supporting British farming, which includes selling only 100% British sourced fresh beef, lamb, chicken and pork.
