Herefords commanding Top Prices!
New Record Price for Hereford Female - Solpoll 1 Stella C16 sells for £12,000.
A record price for a Hereford female sold in the UK has been established, with the recent sale of Solpoll 1 Stella C16 for £12 000 to breed newcomers David and Maggie Kelly, Cumbria.
“Stella”, a seven year old cow was bred by John & William McMordie, Ballygowan, Co. Down, Northern Ireland and is the second five figure female sold in recent years from this well known herd, established in 1953. Sired by Udel 1 Vindicator, as a heifer, she was N.I. Female of the Year in 2008, and has gone on to be one of the top breeding cows in the herd. All three of her sons have been sold for breeding with two working in pedigree herds. Solpoll 1 Grenade joined John Henning’s Boley herd and Solpoll 1 Hero the Inter-breed Beef Performance Champion at the Royal Ulster show 2012, was sold for the top price at the Autumn Show & Sale in Hereford to John Walker, Docklow Herefords.
“Stella” was sold with her four month old heifer calf at foot, Solpoll 1 Stella K27, who was sired by the herd’s new stock bull Panmure 1 Henry who was awarded N.I. Bull of the Year in 2012.
Commenting on his purchase David Kelly, known for his highly successful Netherhall Limousin herd said, “We came over looking to buy some heifers but after seeing the cow and calf I knew I had to try and buy her as a foundation female for my new herd, she is an outstanding cow”
John McMordie stated, “We wish David & Maggie all the success with their new venture, and whilst we hadn’t planned to sell one of our best females, we know she will go on to breed very well, as she has already proven herself, through her progeny in both the show and sale rings. We also have a daughter retained and have embryo calves due this Autumn, so we won’t be losing all of her breeding”.
