Thanks to the cooling effects of water on PV panels, the system produces more energy than land-based of a similar size.

The Greener Group are pleased to announce that we are to become the first company in the UK to install the revolutionary new HYDRELIO floating Solar PV system for large bodies of water. Hydrelio brackets allow standard PV panels to be installed on bodies of water such as drinking water reservoirs, quarry lakes and ponds.

We have teamed up with W.R. Bennett to install 200kW of solar photovoltaic panels on their brand new 60 million litre irrigation reservoir at their Sheeplands Farm site in Reading, UK. The new installation will be used to power the pump that sends water from the reservoir through to the farm to aid soft fruit production.

Hydrelio floating solar PV systems offer other benefits to installers as well as a steady supply of green energy. By decreasing the surface area of the reservoir exposed to the elements they reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation by up to 33% – allowing for more water to be retained for the farm. The systems are also fitted with solar-powered aerators that naturally oxygenate the water and remove organic pollution, limiting the need for harsh chemicals. Due to the cooling effect of the water on the panels floating solar PV produce more energy than an equivalently sized land-based installation.

The Greener Group has a long history with Sheeplands Farm, having already installed a 70kW biomass boiler to provide an environmentally friendly heating solution to the site as well as 150kW of land-based solar PV installations across several barns and cold storage containers.

Speaking about the new installation The Greener Group Director Elliott Parkhouse said: “Everyone at The Greener Group is extremely excited about this project, given the amount of challenges we have faced along the way it feels a great achievement to finally have planning permission. Hopefully it inspires others to think how and where they could generate their own power!”

The Greener Group was founded in 2009 as a solar panel installer and has since expanded into other areas of renewable technology for both domestic and commercial clients. We pride ourselves on being on the cutting-edge of technology as we were the first UK Company to install solar electric roof slates, SolarEdge retrofit IndOP technology and now the revolutionary HYDRELIO floating solar PV system for large bodies of water.
