Clear criteria needed for bioenergy sustainability

Charlotte Morto urges MPs to think about how we measure and define the sustainability of different types of biofuels when considering the subsidy proposals under review.

Urging MPs to think about how we measure and define the sustainability of different types of biofuels when considering the subsidy proposals under review today [06 March] Charlotte Morton, chief executive, ADBA said:

“Renewable energy needs to be sustainable to have credibility and justify public support.

“We need to be able to compare different forms of bioenergy through common criteria, which include the wider benefits to the environment, so that we support those technologies that are both efficient and truly sustainable.

“Growing crops for biogas is incredibly efficient, and also supports food production through improved crop rotations and the recycling of nutrients and organic matter, enhancing soil quality and reducing the need for artificial fertilisers and pesticides.”
