Diamond woods – the new jewels in the countryside

Land sought for permanent tribute to Queen’s Jubilee

The Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland creation and conservation charity, is offering landowners the gem of a chance to be at the heart of the Queen’s 2012 Diamond Jubilee celebrations, by planting an exclusive ‘Diamond Wood’ on their land.

In one of the most prestigious programmes ever undertaken by the Trust, each Diamond Wood will be one of 60 flagship woods in the UK – representing each year of Her Majestys reign.

The project has the Queen’s support – and HRH The Princess Royal is to be patron.

Each successful applicant can call on a bespoke support package from the Trust, with grant funding advice and specialist help with design and tree species.

It will commemorate the 2012 Diamond Jubilee, marking Queen Elizabeth II’s 60th year as monarch. Next to Queen Victoria in 1897, she is the only British sovereign ever to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee.

As the first step the charity is looking for landowners with potential planting sites of around 60 acres (although any above 20 acres may be considered) who would like to take up the limited opportunity to create one of the vanguard Diamond Woods on their own land.

Hundreds of smaller ‘Jubilee Woods’ will also be created, and thousands of community, school and individual plantings across the country will take place from autumn 2011 until the close of 2012, involving a planned ten per cent of the population

Georgina McLeod, project head at the Woodland Trust, said: “We are absolutely delighted that the Princess Royal has chosen to be patron of Jubilee Woods. We very much hope that landowners will want to join us in paying a very special tribute to the Queen, while at the same time creating something living and lasting to hand on to future generations.

“Our Diamond Woods will play the lead role in our overall Jubilee Woods project, so this is a unique opportunity.”

Jubilee Woods is part of the Trust’s ‘More Trees, More Good’ campaign, launched earlier this year, which aims to transform the UK’s landscape within a generation through the doubling of native woodland cover in this country – already one of the lowest in Europe – over the next 50 years. The Trust now offers a range of mechanisms to inspire and enable large organisations, schools, community groups and individuals to plant trees on their own land.

The Woodland Trust will offer each successful Diamond Woods applicant a tailored design service for their wood, advice on species selection, access issues, contractors, grants, bulk buying, onsite branding, and a strong media profile, to help garner support from local people and organisations when planting begins, as well as aftercare visits.

The final 60 Diamond Woods owners will also be invited to an end of project celebration and will feature in a commemorative booklet, which the Woodland Trust will present to the Queen.
