Professor Adam Hart, new patron of Bees Abroad
Professor Adam Hart, co-presenter of the recent Hive Alive series on BBC2, has agreed to become a patron of Bees Abroad, the charity seeking to reduce poverty in developing countries through beekeeping.
Adam Hart is Professor of Science Communication at the University of Gloucestershire and an enthusiast of ‘social insects’ – those insects that live together, such as ants, some wasps and of course honeybees.
Initially he studied honeybee behaviour as part of his PhD at the University of Sheffield, and has since studied honeybees and stingless bees in Mexico and Brazil as well as the UK.
“I am delighted to become a patron of Bees Abroad,” said Prof Hart. “I have seen first-hand the difference that bees make in so many communities and I know that Bees Abroad makes a huge difference to the people it helps. I feel privileged to be a part of such a vibrant charity.”
He has long been involved in science communication in the media and as a speaker at festivals and other events. A regular broadcaster, he presented On the Trail of the American Honeybee for BBC Radio 4, and the RTS and Broadcast Digital Award nominated Planet Ant for BBC4, as well as Hive Alive on BBC2. He also chaired the panel event Bees are on their Knees? at this year’s Cheltenham Science Festival.
He has been involved with Bees Abroad in the past, including a brief stint as a trip leader, showing beekeepers the honeybees and stingless bees of the Yucatan.
