Keeping things local is key say Wiggly Wigglers as they launch an all-British bird feed
The UK is a nation of bird lovers; indeed one in three of us now supports and encourages wildlife in our gardens. To protect our environment and wildlife it makes sense therefore that the source of our seed should be as local as possible. Natural gardening company Wiggly Wigglers (www.wigglywigglers.co.uk) has launched a new ‘greener’ product for feeding birds. Their all-British seed mix is thought to be the first of its kind in the UK.
The seed used in the new Wiggly range is sown, grown, cleaned and bagged by British farmers. It is a mixture of: black sunflower seeds, Indigo wheat plus unrolled oats, rapeseed, millet, linseed, canary seed and a little oyster grit so it is sure to attract and support a wide range of birds. The seed is free flowing so that it can be scattered on bird tables or used in feeders.Heather Gorringe, owner of the Herefordshire Company, comments “People often only think of buying local when it comes to their food. Yet with bird food we are shipping product that should be grown here from all over the globe. It’s time to think about how we can source locally, so that we can reduce transportation and therefore carbon. In addition the birds will get the benefit in the field ( they will always get a feed before it is harvested) and the farmer will have more diverse crops which is of benefit to them and the environment”
The 1kg box is 3.29 and is available online www.wigglywigglers.co.uk and in selected local farm shops and garden centers.
