Bishop Burton College wins UK’s top excellence award
Bishop Burton College has won the British Quality Foundation’s 2011 UK Excellence Award, the UK’s premier business award.
It was chosen by an independent awards jury for its outstanding performance and sustained competitiveness.
Bishop Burton College was presented with its award at the UK Excellence Awards 2011 ceremony which took place in London at the weekend.
The event was hosted by broadcaster and journalist, Louise Minchin, and attended by the BQF’s Patron, HRH the Princess Royal.
The College is a truly inspirational place, due in no small part to the visionary leadership of the Principal Jeanette Dawson. The continuous improvement culture that is all pervasive across the College, coupled with the ‘Freedom within a Framework’ mantra, encourages everyone to be innovative and creative, and therefore to be a key driver of the College’s long-term success.
Mrs Dawson said: “The whole process [of entering the Award] has invigorated us and created a genuine buzz about the place.
“At Bishop Burton we strive to make a real difference in the lives of our students, and to deliver an excellent experience to our customers. We pride ourselves on our core values and the behaviours these require us all to demonstrate.

Launched in 1994, the UK Excellence Award recognises organisations which have demonstrated excellence in all areas of operation, and uses the EFQM Excellence Model as the framework for assessing entrants.
Bishop Burton College is one of three organisations to win the 2011 UK Excellence Award the other two are St Anne’s Primary School in Derry, Northern Ireland and Siemens Industry Automation and Drive Technologies.

UK Excellence Awards 2011
The UK Excellence Awards are run annually by the British Quality Foundation (BQF) and feature the presentation of the UK Excellence Award, the BQF Achievement Awards, the Lean Six Sigma Award and the BQF Gold Medal Award for Excellence.
The 2011 ceremony took place on Thursday 13 October at the InterContinental London Park Lane. It was hosted bybroadcaster and journalist, Louise Minchin, and attended by the BQF’s Patron, HRH the Princess Royal. The evening culminated with a stunning cabaret from leading performers of the current West End musical theatre productions of Phantom of the Opera and Les Misrables.
UK Excellence Award
The UK Excellence Award is one of the highest accolades any organisation in the UK can achieve. Launched in 1994, it recognises organisations which have demonstrated excellence in all areas of operation. Entrants for the award are assessed against the EFQM Excellence Model, a management framework used by over 30,000 organisations in Europe and beyond. It enables organisations to assess their degree of excellence and helps them to understand their key strengths and the areas in which they need to improve. Previous winners include Wakefield & District Housing, Ricoh UK Products Ltd and Siemens Healthcare.
