Mackintosh of Glendaveny, based north of Aberdeen, will see its range of products being sold in Dubai and throughout the Middle East and appearing on the shelves of twenty of Sainsbury’s Scottish stores for the first time.

The company, which already supplies rapeseed oil products to 64 of Tesco’s Scottish stores, will see that arrangement nearly double to take in 118 of its stores north of the border.

And in recent days, Mackintosh of Glendaveny has been shortlisted for a prestigious industry award in the Environmental Sustainability category at the Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards.

Set up by 25 year old Gregor Mackintosh in 2009, Mackintosh of Glendaveny will supply 10500 litres of its cold pressed rapeseed oil to Just Food International, a food wholesaler based in Dubai. This follows a successful trade visit to the Gulf Food Show in February organised by Scottish Development International.

From next week the company will see their 500ml Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil begin to appear on twenty Sainsbury stores in Scotland. The additional 54 Tesco stores will begin to stock selected product lines from the range towards the end of May. Mackintosh of Glendaveny also supplies 43 Asda outlets with five of its oil products.

Gregor Mackintosh, managing director of Mackintosh of Glendaveny said: “The high quality of products produced in Scotland is renowned across the world and we are pleased to become an exporter of Scottish produce for the first time. To export our first products to a region which is one of the world’s most significant economic hubs is something that we’re extremely proud of.

“In addition to that, securing a new contract with Sainsbury and more than doubling our contract with Tesco within the first year is a tremendous endorsement of the investment and effort put in to make the business a premier supplier of high quality rapeseed oils.

“We have invested £250K in the last year to ensure that our systems and processes are fit for purpose for dealing with the demands of the food industry both domestically and internationally. Our upgraded bottling line has the capacity to fill up to 11,500 bottles a day making us the largest producer of cold pressed rapeseed oil in Scotland.”

Mackintosh of Glendaveny’s major investment phase has seen improved production facilities, the purchase of a new bottling line and new storage tanks, all to meet multiple retailer audit standards. The company can now process and dispatch orders within 24 hours of receiving them.

Gregor Mackintosh added: “We’ve been working for some time to secure our first export deal and have been supported throughout by Scottish Enterprise/Scottish Development International. Their expertise in getting us in front of buyers and supporting our marketing efforts in the region has played a major part in securing this first expert arrangement.”

The Extra Virgin rapeseed oil, which is pressed and bottled on Gregor’s family farm in Glendaveny, Aberdeenshire, contains half the saturated fat content and ten times more Omega 3 levels than olive oil and only six per cent saturated fat – the lowest level of any other oil on the market.

Gregor came up with the idea for the business whilst studying for a degree at the Scottish Agricultural College in Aberdeen is an advocate for young entrepreneurship and has been a finalist in both the Shell Livewire Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and PSYBT National Award in recent years. Mackintosh of Glendaveny received eight gold stars for its products from the 2011 and 2012 Great Taste Awards.
