A Carmarthen family were today announced as the national winners of the Weetabix Wheat Art competition 2010. Farmer Alex Jamieson was inspired by his triplets love of cartoon characters Wallace & Gromit. The Welsh family secured victory by swapping plasticine for wheat to build an outstanding 20ft sculpture of the famous duo.
The national competition ran in conjunction with the NFU to celebrate the British wheat harvest. Weetabix is committed to supporting British farming, with all of the wheat used in Weetabix sourced in Britain. The entire Jamieson family, including 11 year old triplets Robert, Thomas and Megan and brother Benja (15), battled the Welsh weather to amaze the judges with their sculpture depicting Wallace & Gromit alongside a gigantic scary were-rabbit. They scooped the 5,000 top prize, beating seven other regional finalists which included vehicles, animals and nursery rhymes all created using British wheat. The Jamiesons beat a fire-breathing dragon from Lincolnshire and a larger than life Spitfire plane from Cumbria in the closely fought annual contest.
Sally Abbott of Weetabix, congratulated the Jamiesons saying: This year farmers have battled with the weather, but they have still produced outstanding entries to the Wheat Art Competition. The sculpture of Wallace & Gromit really stood out and captured the spirit of the competition perfectly. The pride these farmers take in their crops is reflected in their sculptures and echoes the pride the Weetabix Food Company takes in producing top quality cereal.
Peter Kendall, President of the NFU said: The Weetabix Wheat Art Competition demonstrates how creative and resourceful British farmers can be. We are proud to be able to recognise the winners dedication to producing these amazing sculptures as well as to farming in general.
