Protected Food Name status

Comment from Laura Dodds, Market Development Manager for HCC Meat Promotion Wales, on East Kent Goldings being awarded PDO status:

“The UK has many different regional specialities that we should be proud of, and it’s great to see that more and more producers are applying for Protected Food Name status in order to get these products recognised.

“Achieving the status means producers are able to market their product as unique and secure a corner of the marketplace for themselves. The application process is rigorous, however it is worth the effort as it is this high level of scrutiny that ensures only the best produce is awarded the status and stands out from the competition.

“The UK currently has 49 Protected Food Name products, compared to France’s 200 and Italy’s 254, so having more British products with the status will not only boost the reputation and profile of producers but also to ensure Great Britain is well represented on an international level.

“Welsh Lamb is currently celebrating 10 years of Protected Geographical Indication, which is one of three Protected Food Name labels awarded to regional and traditional produce whose authenticity and origin can be guaranteed.

“Welsh Lamb was awarded Protected Geographical Indication in 2003 for its distinctive flavour, which is a result of the unique Welsh landscape and climate that combine to create lush pastures of grass and fragrant wild herbs and the traditional methods and grassland management of Welsh Lamb farmers.”
