Green MEP responds to badger cull study

An independent scientific assessment of last year’s pilot badger culls in parts of Gloucestershire and Somerset has concluded that they were not effective. The study also found many badgers to have endured unnecessary suffering.

Keith Taylor, the Green Party’s MEP for South East England and a member of the European Parliament’s Animal Welfare Intergroup, has responded to the study. He said:

“It’s becoming increasingly clear that these badger culls are both ineffective in tackling the serious problem of TB in cows and extremely inhumane.

This latest study confirms what many of us have been saying for a long time: badger culls aren’t effective at stopping the spread of TB. With many badgers suffering long, painful deaths it’s time the Government admits just how cruel this cull is.

Ministers must now cancel any plans for further culling of badgers and re-focus its efforts on humane, effective measures to stop the spread of TB.

These new figures will add further weight to calls for the ineffective Environment Secretary, Owen Paterson, to be sacked.

I will be doing all I can to fight against these cruel culls coming to my constiuency.”
