Rain fails to dampen spirits at Newark Show

newarkshow

Constant rain and bitterly cold winds on the first day failed to dampen the spirits of hardy visitors to this years Newark & Nottinghamshire County Show.

Their determination to have a day out whatever the weather was rewarded with a full line-up of displays in the Main Arena, including the dare-devil Bolddog Lings Motorcycle Display Team, scurry driving and the magnificent heavy horse turnouts, and 12 hours of almost non-stop show jumping in the Newark Ring.

With several catering outlets under cover there was time to have a dry out and warm up before braving the elements again to make sure nothing at this action-packed show was missed.

While visitor numbers were down on the same day last year, bright sunshine brought people flocking through the gates on the Sunday with the result that overall figures for the two-day show were only a fraction down on 2009 a record year in itself.

However, records were broken at the 2010 show with a massive total entry in the equine, cattle and sheep classes while the show jumping ring catered for over 500 entries, almost double that of last year, with the final class finishing at 8.30pm on Sunday.

It was a great year for machine enthusiasts too, with a large number of exhibits in the tractor, steam engine, military vehicle and vintage, veteran and classic car lines.

Nineteen recipients of long service and service to agriculture awards accruing a total of nearly 800 years work on the land between them were presented with medals by the Shows President, Mr Graham Cartledge CBE on Sunday. Mr Cartledge also presented Newark & Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society Educational Grant Scheme cheques to six students who will be making their careers and livelihoods in land-based industries within Nottinghamshire.

The 2011 Newark & Nottinghamshire County Show will be held on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 May when everyone will be keeping their fingers crossed for sunshine on both days!
