Today’s teens back milk

The overwhelming majority of teenagers in the UK regard milk as a top-class nutritional drink that should form part of a balanced diet and active lifestyle.

More than 80% of 12-18 year olds say they are fully aware that milk contains nutrients such as calcium and protein which help their bodies stay healthy.

Despite the proliferation of sports drinks available to them, 81% regard milk as ‘a good drink in a balanced diet and physically active lifestyle.’ 78% also believe milk is a healthy drink to consume after physical activity or participation in sport.

More than 1,000 12-18 year olds across the UK were questioned about their attitudes to milk for a survey commissioned by The Dairy Council.

Dr. Judith Bryans, Director of The Dairy Council, said: “People may have the perception that teenagers do not retain the same interest in milk as they do in other sports drinks but the evidence here demonstrates quite clearly and in very substantial numbers how committed this age group is to milk and how they understand the nutritional benefits that the nutrients within milk provide.

“It also demonstrates once again the overwhelming popularity of dairy products within in the UK, particularly within the liquid milk market where consumption within the UK is on the increase.”

About 70% percent of respondents said that they drink milk and have it on their breakfast cereals, with 45% saying that they consume most of their milk at breakfast time.
