An event presented by Bishop Auckland Town Centre Forum in partnership with Durham County Council:

Bishop Auckland Food Festival

in the Durham Dales…

One of North East England’s biggest free food festivals!

Food to be served hot or cold – straight to your plate,
Saturday 17th April in your diary as the exciting imminent date.
Produce to be sourced locally, nationally and from lands afar,
As people travel to County Durham by train, plane, foot and by car.

The delicious choice of traditional delicacies will blow your mind,
The time away from the office and homely chores will allow you to relax and unwind.
You can tuck into a juicy beef steak,
Especially if you’re in the region enjoying a short break.

There’s something for everyone not just for foodies,
With arts & crafts and community events,
Providing lots of family fun and plenty of goodies.

Bishop Auckland in the Durham Dales provides a beautiful backdrop,
An historic rural market town for people to explore,
Investigate and ultimately eat and to shop.

It’s not just your taste buds that will be hurled into overdrive,
With cheese, flavoured teas,
And honey from local bees.
As your pocket won’t be hit with excessive admission fees.
Spicy isn’t pricey - as entry to the stunning festival grounds [Auckland Castle] is FREE!

The food festival has it all – with the choice from over 100 stalls.
Horticulture…. Vegetarian delights… Classy condiments,
And even expert food demonstrations.
Mixed with moreish meats and yummy bakery cakes and sweets.
Even a plate of curry,
If you’re in a hurry and can’t stay all day.
In hand – knife and fork,
As the gathered natives talk warmly about what’s on offer.
Organisers hope to attract a healthy crowd,
To benefit the County’s cultural economic coffers.

It’s hoped the luscious variety of quality culinary treats,
Will enable the annual food festival to achieve amazing global feats,
With County Durham being cast onto the worldwide food map,
In reward for its ambitious programme and Ostrich burgers in a bap.

Description

Auckland Castle has been the home of the Bishops of Durham for over 800 years, and is still  the Bishop's official residence today.
This historic building is the administrative centre for the Diocese, as well as a notable tourist attraction.
The Castle is open to the public from Easter Monday until the last Sunday in September.

The Park

The Bishop’s Deer Park is in eight hundred acres of parkland which reminds visitors of the open Durham, countryside where the Prince Bishops once hunted game.

In the park there are ample places for picnics and there is also the interesting deer shelter or Deercote, built by Bishop Trevor in 1760. This has a grassed quadrangle with shelter in the arcades for the fallow deer which used to roam the park.

The tower formerly had an upper room where the Bishop and his guests could rest from their hunting. Visitor can wander through the beautifully wooded and undulating Bishop's Park with the winding River Gaunless ("The Loiterer") on the south side which joins the Wear just beyond the outer wall of the Castle.
